About Penny

PennyPenny Young studied Acting under Hayes Gordon at Ensemble Studios, graduating in 1987.

Her theatre acting credits include Big River, Ripper and Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean for The Rep and Neighbours for Thingamagiga.  For the Ensemble Theatre Penny performed backing vocals for Normie Rowe for the play One Night in Julia Creek.   She also appeared in the television pilot Up United, the short film Schooled For Success, and in Jim’s Story for the Nine Network.

Studying Film & Television Production/Direction at the Academy of Photogenic Arts, Penny directed several short films, including The Good Samaritan, and had two scripts produced.  Her student script for a commercial was later adopted for a Raguletto television campaign.

Penny was a founding member of the theatre company Thingamagiga Productions, which produced a number of new Australian plays in Sydney and Melbourne over several years.

Her live theatre directing credits include The Old One Two at Ensemble Studios, Unit 46 at Sidetrack Theatre, Neighbours at Cat & Fiddle Theatre, Mark Lee (Gallipoli) in the one man show The Time Machine at Glen Street Theatre and Action at the Tap Gallery.

Since 2010 Penny has been holding drama classes for children in Kindergarten to Year 6 in local primary schools, and in 2015 developed a program for toddlers and pre-schoolers.  She also has experience teaching drama to children with special needs.

Previously, she taught extracurricular drama at Roseville College and for several community groups, and specialised in audition coaching.

Penny is also the creator of the popular new kids’ website Drama4Kids.com.

In her classes, Penny draws on her diverse theatrical background, passion for her art and her love of teaching.  She uses the power of play to engage the children.  They learn through positive activities designed to increase confidence and develop drama skills in a safe, fun and encouraging environment.
